The prescription drug Viagra is among the most sought after medicines.
A study in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) has linked the medication to the increased incidence of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in men taking sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra).
The study, published in the BMJ in November last year, found that men aged 40 to 70 years old taking sildenafil for pulmonary hypertension had a greater rate of death, cardiac arrest, and hospitalisation compared with those aged 40 to 70 years old taking a placebo.
Sildenafil was also associated with a slightly higher incidence of severe heart failure. However, there was no difference in the rate of deaths between the two groups.
The BMJ further found that, at the age of 40, only about 1 in 10 men in the sildenafil group was taking the medicine. About 9 in 10 men in the placebo group were also taking sildenafil.
The study was published in the BMJ.

The study was funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) which is the authority in NHS health and care relating to medicines.
In a statement to BMJ, the NHS said: “The study does not establish that sildenafil has a harmful effect on the cardiovascular system, and the data do not support its use in this population.
“Sildenafil has been shown to increase the risk of serious cardiovascular events such as heart attack, stroke, and myocardial infarction.”
The drug, which is sold by Pfizer, was originally used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. However, PAH has been linked to serious side effects such as high blood pressure in the blood vessels.
In a statement to the British Medical Journal, the company said: “In the current study, sildenafil was not associated with a higher incidence of pulmonary arterial hypertension. This finding is consistent with the findings of a retrospective study in the US that showed the association of sildenafil use and elevated blood pressure in the heart.
“Sildenafil may be of benefit in the management of high blood pressure, as this may reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular events in patients with this condition.”
